Fun rarely comes with the descriptors of
practical and healthy but the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, the nature park
offers just that—a cranberry cooking class led by a registered dietician.
You can sign up for the noon until 2 p.m.
class Cooking with Cranberries or the Baking with Cranberries class offered
from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m. Learn to
make tasty, healthy treats like cranberry apple smoothies and cranberry white
chocolate oatmeal cookies. It’s a chance to meet other aspiring cooks, visit,
while acquiring new recipes.
Each session starts off with a wander through
the Richmond Nature Park on Westminster Highway at No. 5 Road. On the walk, the cooks can see why
Richmond’s bog represents such a boon to cranberry farmers.
There is a $25 charge to cover the costs. The
city offers the following options for registration:
Register using course code #2038439 for
Cooking with Cranberries and #2038438 for Baking with Cranberries one of three
ways: online at www.richmond.ca/register; by calling the Registration Call
Centre at 604-276-4300, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; or in-person
at Richmond Nature Park (11851 Westminster Highway)
The courses, held in conjunction with their
twentyfifth annual Cranberry Sale that runs the same day, October 7, from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m. Come early as the big bags of cranberries often sell out. The
money earned from the sale supports the Richmond Nature Park Society’s
environmental education programs for children and families. Ocean Spray Farms
provides the berries. The funds help to keep programs affordable for all, while
the cranberry buyers walk away with a deal, and quite a haul of the red
berries. Cranberries are easy to freeze. All they take is cleaning and bagging.
